North Sydney

The name of North Sydney was proposed by an alderman of the new city back in 1890 to bring prestige and attract more people. It was changed from the previous name St Leonards which stands for another suburb now.

The names of the suburbs within North Sydney come from the names of early settlers of this area, George Lavender, Michael McMahon or James Milson.

There is also an interesting story about a person called Billy Blue who was a convict, settler and ferryman when he came to Australia in 1801. He died in year 1834 and the streets in North Sydney were named after him. Not only the streets like Blue Street and Blues Point Road but also restaurants like Billi’s Cafe, Olivo on Blue, Blue Ginger or Moorish Blue…

 

It’s nice to walk down Blues Point Road and see a touch of blue in the shops, restaurants and people’s houses and gardens.

North Sydney also has some hidden treasures like Wendy’s Secret Garden or Sawmillers Reserve with a mysterious shipwreck. Another obvious gem is McMahons Point Lookout, my beloved view, beautiful anytime of the day and night all year round.
